The Multidimensional Self-concept in School Contexts: Extending Empirical Findings

This project aims to extend existing empirical self-concept research and theory in school contexts. For this purpose, open research questions are considered, focusing on the internal structure of self-concept, its determination, outcome relations, and gender and age effects.

Project Description

Self-concept is a construct conceptualised as individuals’ self-perceptions. It has been found to be multidimensional and to have domain-specific structure. Therefore, within the school domain, students’ academic self-concept is of high relevance and interest for research and practice.

The research aims to extend existing empirical self-concept research and theory. For this purpose, open research questions are considered, focusing on the internal structure of self-concept, its determination, outcome relations, and gender and age effects. The task is realised by analysing data specially collected for this purpose, but also by doing secondary data analyses. Consequently, a wide student population is considered including both elementary and secondary school students. The given data sets are analysed cross-sectionally as well as longitudinally.
