Abstract:
This study tested whether the gender intensification hypothesis applies to relations between multiple domain-specific self-concept facets and self-esteem. This hypothesis predicts gender-stereotypic differences in these relations and assumes they intensify with age. Furthermore, knowledge about gender-related or age-related differences in self-concept-self-esteem relations might provide valuable knowledge for designing effective self-esteem enhancement interventions. We investigated grade and gender differences in the relations between domain-specific self-concept facets and self-esteem within a sample of 1958 German students in Grades 3 to 6. Results indicated no difference in the self-concept - self-esteem relations between the subsamples of third and fourth graders and fifth and sixth graders or between boys and girls. These relations also did not differ between boys and girls in the subsamples of third and fourth graders and fifth and sixth graders. These results suggest self-concept-self-esteem relations to be invariant across grade levels and gender and thus did not support the gender intensification hypothesis.

Abstract (english):
Purpose - Although policy makers strengthen the necessity of "deregulation", discussions about deregulation vs regulation in Europe still seem to be characterized by a lack of sophistication and require a more differentiated picture of specific forms of deregulation. As a consequence, the analysis of new educational governance approaches should consider the local actor's interpretation of new roles and new responsibilities. Relating actions and reactions of school leaders to their formal environment should lead to more contextual patterns of responsiveness. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach - The authors investigate, based on a survey among Cypriot school leaders, whether school autonomy needs deregulation, or regulation towards autonomy, respectively. At the time of research the school system of Cyprus could be characterized as a "centralized" system and hence represented a suitable field of study. Using a factor model followed by a cluster analysis the paper explores the school leaders' profiles of operative and perceived autonomy in different fields of governance issues and identify different types of leadership. Findings - The authors find that the autonomy school leaders experience is not necessarily related to a "defined" degree of autonomy which is prescribed by educational law and driven by concepts of new public management. Their "perceived" autonomy is also due to factors which can be located at a rather individual level. Originality/value - The findings provide insight into principals' motives to adopt certain styles of leading schools, quite independently from new measures of educational governance. The authors conclude that greater emphasis on systematic support programmes may prepare school principals for gains of autonomy as well as for potential sources of conflict. (DIPF/Autor)

Abstract:
The internal/external (I/E) frame of reference model (Marsh, Am Educ Res J 23:129-149, 1986) conceptualizes students' self-concepts as being formed by dimensional as well as social comparison processes. In the present study, the I/E model was tested and extended in a sample of elementary school children. Core academic skills of reading, writing, and math were related to corresponding and non-corresponding self-concept facets to determine the onset of dimensional contrast effects. School achievement and domain-specific academic self-concepts of 1,114 students from grades 1 to 3 were assessed. Negative paths were found for math achievement on reading self-concept and for reading achievement on math self-concept in the third grade. Math achievement was not associated negatively with writing self-concept. Positive influences were found within the verbal domain for writing achievement on reading self-concept from grade 1 onward. The results suggest a broad interpretation of the I/E model in which contrast as well as assimilation effects are possible. Factors influencing the dimensional comparison processes are discussed. Abstract:
The contribution examines theoretical foundations, factorial structure, and predictive power of student ratings of teaching quality. Three basic dimensions of teaching quality have previously been described: classroom management, cognitive activation, and supportive climate. However, student ratings, especially those provided by primary school students, have been criticised for being biased by factors such as teacher popularity. The present study examines ratings of teaching quality and science learning among third graders. Results of multilevel confirmatory factor analyses (N = 1556 students, 89 classes) indicate that the three-dimensional model of teaching quality can be replicated in ratings of third graders. In a longitudinal study (N = 1070 students, 54 classes), we found ratings of classroom management to predict student achievement, and ratings of cognitive activation and supportive climate to predict students' development of subject-related interest after teacher popularity is controlled for. The analyses show that student ratings can be useful measures of teaching quality in primary school.

Abstract:
Abstract (english):
According to the stage-environment fit approach, the development of motivation is influenced by the fit between learning context and basic needs (i.e., the needs for autonomy, competence, and social relatedness). It is supposed that school-based extracurricular activities are especially suitable for fostering motivation and, thus, achievement by providing developmentally appropriate learning contexts. Until now, the influence of need fulfillment in extracurricular activities on school attachment and achievement has not been investigated. The aim of this study is to examine these relationships in German all-day schools and to explore the specific impact of each need across age. The longitudinal research sample consists of more than 3,000 students in Grades 5, 7 and 9. The students' perceptions of autonomy, competence (challenge) and social relatedness (student-staff-relationship) are analyzed as predictors of school attachment and achievement (i.e., grades). A conditional growth curve model reveals that the three quality features influence school attachment across age, but barely relate to achievement. Student-staff-relationship proves to be the most influential predictor in all age groups. However, the development of school attachment significantly influences achievement. Thus, promoting school attachment by means of high quality extracurricular activities should lead to the positive development of academic achievement.

Abstract (english):
Background: Depression is characterized by gender-specific distinctions, with women being affected more often than men. The Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) is frequently used to assess depression in primary healthcare. Previous research has yielded heterogeneous findings on the factor structure, and little is known of its measurement invariance across gender. The aim of this study was 1) to evaluate the fit of four previously hypothesized models of PHQ-9 factor structure in patients with major depression in German family practices, and 2) to test the measurement invariance of the bestfitting model across gender. Methods: We used the baseline data from a cluster-randomized controlled trial. The diagnosis of major depression was based on the PHQ-9 and confirmed by the family physician. We calculated Confirmatory Factor Analyses (CFA) to assess which of the previously hypothesized factor structures (a one- and three different two-factor solutions) would best fit our data.We also calculated Complex Survey Analyses (CSA) and Multi Sample Analyses (MSA). Results: We included 626 participants (75.4% women and 24.6% men). A two-factor model with five 'somatic' labeled items and four 'non-somatic' labeled items presented the best fit indices. The model measurement was invariant across gender. Limitations: The inclusion criteria used in the main trial mean the study sample was not representative of all patients with major depression in German family practices. Conclusions: The measurement invariance across gender revealed by this study is a precondition for the use of the PHQ-9 without gender-specific adaptation in patients with major depression in German family practices. Abstract:
In this chapter, school climate variables are employed in order to explore school principals' influence on student achievement through the Pashiardis-Brauckmann Holistic Leadership Framework. The aim is to identify the mechanisms through which leadership influences student learning. For the purposes of the LISA project, a number of school climate variables were used as mediating variables between the principal's leadership styles and student achievement. All analyses pointed towards a model comprising seven such mediating factors. The seven school climate factors were labeled as follows: professional development opportunities, evaluation and feedback, teacher commitment, parental involvement, teaching and learning practices, student-teacher interactions, and student expectations. Then, an analysis was performed that examined the degree to which school leadership styles reliably predicted school climate variables. The findings suggest that the instructional, the structuring, and the entrepreneurial leadership styles are utilized by school principals in order to enhance student achievement.

Abstract:
Abstract (english):
In the present study, teacher self-efficacy was examined in a cross-national setting. The cross-national generalizability of the scale and the meaning of cross-national variation in mean scores were investigated. Using data from TALIS involving 73,100 teachers in 23 countries, teacher self-efficacy was shown to have a similar unifactorial structure and equivalent positive correlations with teaching practices and job satisfaction across countries. At the country level, significant correlations were only found for job satisfaction; in addition, teacher self-efficacy was related to collectivism, modesty, and extremity scoring. Thus, mean score differences between countries mainly reflect cultural value orientations and response styles.

Abstract (english):
Person-environment relationships become particularly important in later life. Our discussion of challenges in the assessment of experiential person-environment exchange processes is grounded on a four-domain model of perceived housing. We present empirical findings from an iterative process of instrument revision seeking optimization of both reliability and validity issues regarding controlrelated and meaning-oriented domains of perceived housing. Our initial reconstruction, however, was not confirmed to represent a consistent and reliable measure for the suggested dimensions of housing-related identity, privacy, and autonomy. Exploratory posthoc analyses of the pilot pool of indicators suggests six holistic facets, such as "daily independence" "neighborhood belonging", "mirror of self", "continuity and remaining in place" and "being alone and at peace". Plausible content-related interpretation and relations to major background characteristics encourage the continuous task of tailoring assessment instruments to meet the holistic character of housing experiences in later life.
