The next virtual community meeting of the Working Group on Reading at DIPF will take place on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, 3:30 – 5:00 PM (CET). Hanada Taha Thomure, Endowed Professor of Arabic Language Education at Zayed University, Dubai, will provide an overview of the research initiatives led by the Zai Arabic Language Research Center.
In her talk "Foundational collaborative work on Arabic language teaching and learning" she will focus on three key projects. The first project involves a systematic review of diglossia and its implications for Arabic language teaching and learning. This review synthesizes existing research to identify challenges and best practices in navigating the coexistence of formal and colloquial Arabic in educational contexts. The second project centers on the development of the Balanced Arabic Readability Evaluation Corpus (BAREC), an open-source resource (that will be released in December 2025) designed to assess and enhance the readability of Arabic texts. Lastly, the session will examine research on Arabic oral reading fluency and its connection to the Smart Arabic Diagnostic (SARD) tool, an innovative assessment platform.
