Rocket – The Role of Orthographic Knowledge in Reading and Spelling Development
The project investigates the contribution of orthographic knowledge in the individual reading and spelling development of German-speaking second-graders. Other relevant predictors of written language acquisition, such as phonological awareness, auditory memory and naming speed, are also being assessed as part of the project.
Project Description
Phonological awareness, auditory memory and naming speed have proven to be important components of children’s literacy development. However, little is known about the role of orthographic knowledge.
The project Rocket aims at investigating the contribution of orthographic knowledge in reading and spelling development. In order to uncover the longitudinal contribution and relations of orthographic knowledge and aforementioned component skills, children at an early stage of literacy development will be repeatedly assessed over several points in time. The planned longitudinal analyses should help to better understand the role of orthographic knowledge and its interaction with other component skills for reading and spelling development.
Project Objectives
The aim is to investigate the relations between orthographic knowledge, phonological awareness, auditory memory, naming speed and reading and spelling development.
