Saving and re-using research data from the Framework Programme for the Promotion of Empirical Educational Research – part project DIPF
The co-operation project is funded by the Federal Ministry of education and Research (BMBF): DIPF, GESIS and IQB will collaborate in developing strategies for saving and re-using research data from the Framework Programme for the Promotion of Empirical Educational Research.
Project Description
The project targets the permanent storage of research data gained from the Framework Programme for the Promotion of Empirical Educational Research and enablement of data re-usage. Hence, measures of the pilot project adhere to the directives on ensuring good practice in science by targeting the prevention of loss of acquired research data. The project will assist in procuring research data and respective metadata. Data will be stored in the research data centres hosted by DIPF, GESIS and IQB and indexed in a central reference system. Together with the projects responsible for the original studies, the partners further aim to develop measures for a reliable re-usage of data. Researchers will be able to access the data for secondary analyses on condition of adherence to data protection and property rights legislation. Thereby, the number of elaborate original assessments can be minimised. Hence, the co-operation project meets recommendations issued by the Science Council concerning the further development of the research infrastructure in Germany by 2020, according to which assurance and accessibility of research data are amongst the most urgent tasks in ascertaining efficient and quality-assured research.
Owing to the heterogeneity of data, the project partners are facing a particular challenge. The Framework Programme comprises different educational research facets– spanning neuroscience, professionalization of educators, language diagnostics and language intervention as well as the aspect of educational measurement. In view of this complex situation, the project will bring together the specific expertise of the three institutes involved. All of the research data centres have been accredited as quality-assured research infrastructures by the German council for social and economic data (Rat für Sozial- und Wirtschaftsdaten, RatSWD). DIPF fulfils co-ordinating functions and monitors counselling of the studies’ originators as well as data delivery and data assurance processes.
