Abstract: In this chapter, school climate variables are employed in order to explore school principals' influence on student achievement through the Pashiardis-Brauckmann Holistic Leadership Framework. The aim is to identify the mechanisms through which leadership influences student learning. For the purposes of the LISA project, a number of school climate variables were used as mediating variables between the principal's leadership styles and student achievement. All analyses pointed towards a model comprising seven such mediating factors. The seven school climate factors were labeled as follows: professional development opportunities, evaluation and feedback, teacher commitment, parental involvement, teaching and learning practices, student-teacher interactions, and student expectations. Then, an analysis was performed that examined the degree to which school leadership styles reliably predicted school climate variables. The findings suggest that the instructional, the structuring, and the entrepreneurial leadership styles are utilized by school principals in order to enhance student achievement.

Abstract (english): In recent years, initiatives and measures targeting the assurance and development of individual school quality have led to changes in the conditions of school leadership actions in the context of the education systems. From the perspective of educational policy, these "new" contextual conditions are often conceived in terms of enabling an enforced concern for effective (i. e. outcome-oriented) concepts of action. As far as school leaders are concerned, this mainly refers to using
assigned enhanced realms of action and taking on responsibility for the development of their schools, based on quality-oriented reference norms.
Against this background, findings from an explorative, international comparative school leadership study, "Leadership Improvement for Student Achievement" (LISA), are reported, investigating into the relationship between different degrees of "school autonomy" and applied leadership styles, delivering insights into possible points of breakage between intended enablement and actual implementation of effective leadership actions.

Abstract (english): The overall purpose of the European Union-funded Leadership Improvement for Student Achievement (LISA) project was to explore how leadership styles, as conceptualized in the developed dynamic holistic leadership framework, directly or indirectly affect student achievement at the lower secondary level of education in seven European countries. This paper seeks to address this issue. In its methodological design the study is a mixture of research methods and collaborative action research shared by acting school leaders and researchers. A series of statistical analyses was carried out in order to gather evidence whether the data from the LISA project supported the initially developed holistic leadership theoretical framework. Consequently, first some descriptive statistics are introduced in order to acquaint the reader with the kind of data the survey used from the schoolteacher questionnaires. Further, some explanations are laid out with regard to the methodologies employed in order to analyze the data, such as the treatment of missing data and exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis structural equation models (SEM); then, a description of the main findings is offered through the analyses, which were conducted in order to predict school performance level from the relevant leadership style, followed by between-countries comparisons and analyses. Finally, an in-depth discussion and interpretations of the main findings - both integrative and concludive in nature - are offered. The quantitative analyses stemming from confirmatory factor analysis and SEM identified five robust underlying dimensions of practised leadership styles across the seven participating European countries. Furthermore, the findings stemming from the logistic regression analyses pointed out clearly the complementary inter-relationships of the main research questions of the study and analytical strands, especially with regard to the impact of certain intermediate variables on student achievement. The expected results of this approach are predominantly assumed/seen as an enrichment in the grounding of hypothetical and theoretical ideas as well as professional development for both school principals and researchers. Such an equal contribution of school leaders and school leaders' organizations and researchers could probably provide a model for future professional development programs for both groups of professionals. Abstract (english): Paper-based assessment reached its limits, however the shift from paper-pencil (PP) to computer-based assessment (CBA) poses new questions. Validity issues regarding media-effect studies belong to one of the key areas. Several studies have been conducted with older students to measure validity (Csapo, Molnar & R. Toth, 2009), however, only a few focused on early childhood education (Choi and Tinkler, 2002). The purpose of this paper is (1) to study the media-effects in a cross-curricular competency field by first grade (age 6-7) students; (2) categorize item formats and students according to their media-dependence. Due to the young age of the target population, the instrument of the study consisted of figural, nonverbal items. The same inductive reasoning test was administered in PP and in CB mode (N=5156 and 313, respectively). The online data collection was carried out with the TAO platform. Student-level differences indicated media-effect, students' achievement was higher in PP (45.33%) than in CB format (32.6%; t=6.11, p<.01). The highest media-effect was noticeable at items where the answer and distractors contained more figures. Students' socio-economic factors, gender and frequencies of computer-usage did not influence their CB test scores.

Abstract (english): Classmate PC (CMPC) is the only laptop included in the Hungarian school supply list selected for purchase through grant applications with an inbuilt pedagogical model. The objective of this research is to document and evaluate phases in the life of CMPC laptops in Hungarian schools, to highlight the patterns of its current and future uses. Based on survey and field observation data of teachers and system managers, we also describe personal and infrastructure requirements needed for minimum and optimum utilisation of its potentials. This paper reports findings about: (1) how often used the laptops by the teachers in the classroom? (2) what resources are used by teachers to prepare their laptop based teaching? (3) for what purposes are networked laptops used? (4) what types of software and hardware development do teachers consider important for more frequent use?

Abstract (english): Compared to traditional paper-and-pencil testing, technology-based assessment (TBA) offers the possibility to measure new constructs e.g. by using rich stimulus materials during testing. One example for the innovative use of TBA is the MicroDYN approach that measures dynamic problem solving (DPS). It integrates several advantages of computerized testing: it accomplishes a testing system involving everyday situation tasks, in which variables influence one or more outcomes, and provides the opportunity to assess dynamics. The user thereby has to interact with a system. In this paper we present the results of a first pilot study that measures adults DPS competences in Hungary. Our aims are to (1) describe the internal structure of adults competency level in DPS; (2) to identify item characteristics affecting item difficulty and (3) to depict relationships between DPS and a background data set (consisting of motivation, ICT-related variables). The MicroDYN test was composed of 8 complex and dynamic items. Results indicate that the internal structure of adults competency level could be best described with a two dimensional model (two facets: model building and forecasting). The examination of item level characteristics identified the quality of effects as a responsible factor for item difficulty. Based on background variables, adults DPS competency did not show significant relationships with ICT related variables, self efficacy and some of the measured motivational aspects. However, higher DPS-scores were generally associated with success orientation and job qualification.

Abstract (english): Twenty years of transformation have gradually opened the education systems of the East Central European countries to the common challenges of Europeanisation and Globalisation. On the other hand, the educational map gives insights into existing or even re-awakened differences among the individual national patterns tracing back to socio-economic, political and cultural particularities. Recognising this fundamental tension lays the ground for the recent history of educational reforms and for contextualising them within their specific societal frameworks. Special emphasis is laid on the outcomes of reforms due to controversial approaches and political decisions within given constellations within their national ranges and their involvements in the policies of the European Union.
